Chocolate tasting

Chocolate tasting led by Tracey Chapman on 5th March

Can you taste apricots? Brazil nuts? Caramel? We had great fun tantalising our taste buds with delicious chocolate at our recent tasting event. We learnt how craft chocolate is made, what makes it different from industrial chocolate and how to taste using all of our senses. Members commented that it was a real eye-opener actually to focus on a product that you might otherwise just gobble up without much consideration of its complexity, and also to get a sense of how quality makes itself felt on your taste buds!

Wine Tasting

A themed wine tasting, “Hidden Corners of Spain and Portugal”, led by qualified wine instructor Ian Abrahams.  Ian commented that many people are familiar with Spanish wines but much less so with wines from Portugal.

Ian worked as a Wine Guide for John Harvey & Sons and now runs Wine Appreciation Classes at the Stoke Lodge Adult Learning Centre and other venues.

Wine Tasting

We were pleased to invite members and guests to our last event of the year – a themed wine tasting class. The tasting was themed “Europe vs.the Rest of the World” and led by qualified wine instructor Ian Abrahams. Ian worked as a Wine Guide for John Harvey & Sons and now runs Wine Appreciation Classes at the Stoke Lodge Adult Learning Centre and other venues.

We blind tasted four pairs of similar wines with one of each pair being from Europe and the other from the Rest of the World. In a tight competition, the Rest of the World won.

Beer Tasting

Can you tell the difference between a stout and a porter? Do you know how to identify a gueuse or a lambic from a saison? Know your Chinook from your Equinox?

Mystified, excited or just plain interested – the Beer Masterclass organised by OUSBB unravelled the secrets of beer styles, hops, and beer brewing. It was held at the Brewhouse and Kitchen in Cotham, just off Whiteladies Road. The evening included: an explanation of the beer brewing process and a “tour” of the microbrewery at the pub; tasting of 8 different beer styles; tasting notes and materials; and in-between beers nibbles. For those who fancied it, there was an option for food to finish off the evening.
