Board Games Night

25 February – Do you need wheat? Has your plane got buried in the sand? Fives are in short supply? Before lockdowns descended, a group met at Bristol’s Chance & Counters, an outrageously popular, crowd-funded board games café and pub at the bottom of the Christmas Steps to try various games (the favourite remains Settlers of Catan).

Board Games Night

22 January – We had ten people and three parallel games going for most of the evening at Chance and Counters. The place was extremely busy, as it is every day, so the games guru wasn’t there to help us choose games initially. We picked our own and eventually dealt with fascinating questions such as “How do we ever get to 100?,” “Why is this so &%$*£! complicated?,” and “Where do you want to put that living room?”  One new game, Azul, impressed with beautiful playing pieces and a simple central premise.  Much fun was had by a mix of new punters and familiar faces.

Board Games Night

We had lots of fun on 1 March, playing at two tables in Bristol’s raucously busy games café, Chance & Counters. One table played Adventureland, a beautiful and elaborate strategy game; the other, Karuba – all players have to get their pawns from the beach to temples in the jungle. The one classic game we played was Dixit, where punning and visual creativity were rewarded. Much fun was also had playing Joking Hazard, a card game where players have to construct a short cartoon narrative from mostly lewd pictures. Not for the faint-hearted, and alcohol did help! Everybody agreed that we should do this again, and we did!
